What Does Sex Therapy Involve?
Usually sex therapy involves a detailed assessment process that explores biological functioning as well as psychological and social influences related to the presenting problem. Once we have a detailed history, I am able to come up with a case conceptualization and a treatment plan.
If needed, the treatment plan may involve referrals to a medical professional combined with talk therapy. I typically use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems and/or Psychodynamic psychotherapy when working with sexual issues. You may have homework assignments suggested to you. Sometimes, couples therapy is recommended as a mode of treatment. Sex therapy never involves a sexual relationship between the therapist and the client.
As a certified sex-therapist, I have received extensive training in treating various issues related to sex. Some of the issues that I work with include:
- Low Sexual Desire
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Painful Sex
- Premature Ejaculation
- Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior
- Lack of orgasm or struggle to achieve orgasm
- Performance Anxiety
- The impact of sexual trauma on sex.
- Navigating desire differences and sexual communication in a relationship
